Long and Shortpass Filters

Introduction

In many optical systems, it is often necessary to have a wavelength filtering system that transmits the light of the  wavelengths longer or shorter than a reference Wavelength. These types of filters are called longpass and shortpass filters or - in common - edge filters. The longpass filter transmits longer wavelengths but rejects shorter wavelengths and vice versa for the Shortpass Filter. Below is shown how two edge filters can be combined into a broad Bandpass filter.

What to consider when ordering edge filters

When ordering longpass or shortpass filters from Ferroperm Optics A/S, the following parameters are important to consider:

  1. Dimensions (e.g. square, circular, size, etc.)
  2. Quantity
  3. Cut-on and cut-off wawelength of the longpass and/or shortpass filter
  4. Wavelength range of transmission and blocking
  5. Slope or steepness of the cut-on or cut-off wawelength region
