Neutral Density Coatings

Introduction

A neutral density filter is used to uniformly attenuate the intensity of light over a broad spectral range. Thus, as an example, a neutral density filter can extend the useful range of photometers or radiometers by attenuating light beams to levels where they are most accurate and linear.

Below curves of five different neutral density filters from Ferroperm Optics A/S are shown.

What to consider when ordering neutral density filters

When ordering neutral density filters from Ferroperm Optics A/S, the following parameters are important to consider:

  1. Dimensions (e.g. square, circular, size, etc.)
  2. Quantity
  3. What optical density (OD) is needed?
  4. Over what wavelength range is attenuation needed?

Short list of applications of neutral density filters

  • In front of detectors (possibly as an integrated part of an optical filter)
  • Calibration of optical equipment
